The ocean covers 70% of the Earth’s surface and it provides food, energy and water. Protecting, preserving, and rehabilitating the oceans might seem like a tall order but Magsaysay Awardee ANGEL C. ALCALA was able to come up with a solution.
ALCALA’s path-breaking research was when he established the Philippines’ first marine protected area (MPA) where he was able to test his 25% Solution theory: if we rehabilitate 25% of coral reefs in a MPA, it will protect 25% of fish species in a given location, resulting in sustainable fish supplies for generations to come.
